The castle, the natural centre of rotation in Hillerød, belongs to the absolute top of renaissance architecture. King Christian IV was born in the castle and was later in charge of a total reconstruction. The national History Museum at Frederiksborg Castle has the largest collection of portraits in Denmark. Many of these are painted portraits but the collection also counts busts, reliefs and photographic portraits.

The Baroque Garden is located in connection with Frederiksborg Castle. The garden which was landscaped by King Frederik IV is the only garden of the Danish royal family that has remained in the baroque style. In 1993 a restoration of the garden was initiated – giving us a garden today in a magnificent shape.
The restored barouque garden is open:
November - February: 10-16. March - April: 10-19.
MaY - August: 10-21.
September - Oktober: 10-19.

Frederiksgade 11 was the old power station of Hillerød but is today a completely new converted museum that holds successive unique exhibitions in the beautiful turbine hall. The museum in Frederiksgade is centrally located as part of the culture axis and just three minutes’ walk from the pedestrian shopping street in Hillerød.

Æbelholt Kolstermuseum (Æbelholt Abbey Museum) and market

The ruins of the largest medieval Augustinian abbey in the Nordic countries. The first abbot was the legendary Saint Vilhelm. Every year a fabulous, cosy Abbey Market takes place at Æbelholt in the middle of June. In 2007 the dates are 14th - 15th June. The Abbey Market offers, among many things, Middle Age entertainment, crossbow- and long bow shooting and a Middle Age choir. All this together with stalls selling coat, fur, pearls, jewels and Middle Age weapons.

Hillerød's city guards wear uniforms from the 16th century. A drum corps and orchestra, they are often senn and heard on the streets of Hillerød, and can be booked to play in Denmark as well as internationally at, for example parades, tattoos etc.
